INTRODUCTION From the top of Mt Crumpit, with his eye pressed to his telescope, The Grinch observes Whoville. The Grinch just hates Christmas, and this year he has decided to disturb the festivities. He enters his spacious cave, stops, picks up a large book and he opens it. Quickly, he writes down some ideas, closes the book, and puts it away. Hooray! The Grinch will deprive the residents of Whoville of their favorite holiday. In the interactive game "The Grinch", you, playing as the Mean One himself, must complete a series of tasks to ruin holiday preparations before Christmas day. You must roam Wholand and it's different environments to complete all the missions set out for you. The game's locations include Whoville, Whoforest, the Dump, Wholake and Whofarm. Your tasks are numerous and diverse, with some more difficult than others. Your missions include: smashing snowmen, putting beehives in Who- cabins, shaving the Dump guardian, drilling holes in campers' canoes, and transforming the Marine-Mobile (your personal submarine) into a monster. Furthermore, in each environment, you must break and/or collect many items such as gifts, blueprints (to built new gadgets), hearts of stone, and sleigh pieces. All these elements will help you to fulfill the Grinch’s master plan of stealing Christmas. The Grinch interactive game is available this fall for the PC, PlayStation game console, and Sega Dreamcast wherever electronic games are sold. And now, onto our sample level... YOUR OBJECTIVES FOR "THE GRINCH" First, you must complete a series of missions to disturb Christmas preparations. This is the only way to progress and access new environments and levels in the game. These missions for The Mean One are explained in The Grinch Book. Next, you must break gifts, which will be scattered around town and carried by the Whos. Finally, you must find gadget blueprints. Without these, the Grinch cannot build his new contraptions, which are needed to reach certain areas in Whoville and to accomplish specified missions. CONTROLLING THE GRINCH The Grinch has basic moves like walking, running, jumping, "pancaking" (in which he squashes items flat) and sneaking. His most important traits are not his moves, but his gadgets. In the game, the Mean One assembles these to accomplish many of his missions. You control the Grinch through your keyboard. Below is a list of his actions and the corresponding keys. This may also be viewed during the game in The Grinch Book by selecting the "Controls" option: Jump/ "pancake": D Bad breath activation: F Gadget activation: A Sneak/ stealth mode: S Switch to Max: TAB Gadget selector: E View/ Slime Shooter mode: R Camera rotation: Q/W Pause/ control The Grinch Book: ESC CONTROLLING MAX Max the dog is the Grinch's constant companion and loyal, though often reluctant, friend. You may use him to perform actions the Grinch cannot; Max acts as an extension of his master. He is not a second character, but functions more as tool to help the Grinch. Max's actions are limited. He can enter small areas, walk on narrow platforms and bring back small items to his master. THE GADGETS To use a gadget, the Grinch must first find the appropriate blueprint located in Whoville and select it with the gadget wheel (see the configuration screen for more details). The Grinch's gadgets are: Rotten Egg Launcher: Extends the Grinch's pitching ability and provides a target pointer in eye- view mode. Slime Shooter: Temporarily neutralizes an opponent. Rocket Spring: Makes the Grinch jump higher. WHOVILLE MISSIONS Smashing Snowmen: This mission is very simple and may be accomplished with basic moves. The snowmen appear throughout Whoville, and the Grinch must find and "pancake" them. If the Grinch has a gadget, such as the Rotten Egg Launcher, he may also use this to help him with the mission. Reaching certain snowmen will be more difficult than others will. Painting Over the Mayor's Posters: The Grinch has the opportunity to annoy his old nemesis, Mayor May Who, by adding his creative Grinchy touch to the Mayor's posters which are plastered all over town. To succeed, he must first find a paintbrush and a bucket. Rotten Egg Launching: To accomplish this mission, the Grinch must have the assembled Rotten Eggs Launcher. The blueprint for this gadget must be located before the Grinch is ready. Next, the First View mode must be used to detect the windows into which the eggs should be launched. The Grinch's movements must be fast and precise, because the windows open and close rapidly. Modifying the Mayor's Statue: This mission is more complicated than earlier ones, and the Rotten Egg Launcher is required. The task is divided into five major steps: the Grinch first must advance the hour on the City Hall Clock, and then sneak by the guards inside City Hall. Next, the Mean One must find the mallet and pick, avoid the security system, and finally alter the Mayor's statue. Advancing the Countdown-to-Christmas Clock: Like the previous mission, this one involves several steps and requires a gadget: the Rocket Spring. The Grinch first must find the correct blueprint. Next, the Grinch should enter the Countdown-to Christmas Clock tower through a door at its base. To reach the top of the tower, the Grinch must open a series of grids. This requires solving the mechanism gear puzzles. After that, the Grinch must find a mallet, solve the bell puzzle and use the mallet to ring the bell on the guard’s head.
