SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ====================================================== The following are the minimum system requirements to launch and play Taz: Wanted: Processor: Pentium III, 500 MHz (or equivalent) RAM: 64Mb Video Card: 16Mb vRAM with 3d Acceleration Sound Card: not required to play CD: 4x Peripherals: MS Compatible Keyboard and Mouse (joystick/gamepad supported) Operating System: Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP Harddrive: 850Mb free space required to install DirectX: version 8.1 (included on the CD) To get the most out of your game, we recommend that your computer has a video card with 32Mb vRAM, and that you play with a gamepad. ====================================================== 2. INSTALLATION ====================================================== The Taz: Wanted Launcher program should start automatically when you insert the CD into the CD Drive. If it does not, 1) Make sure you have uninstalled any previously installed versions of Taz: Wanted. 2) Open the CD directory by double clicking on the CD icon, and then double-click on the "TazLauncher.exe" icon. 3) You can also click on the Windows START-button (lower left corner of the screen), select "Run..." and type "X:\TazLauncher", replacing "X" with the ID letter of your CD drive. 2a. Uninstalling ------------------------------------------------------ To UNINSTALL, insert the CD to launch Taz: Wanted. Click "Update Install", select the "Remove" radio button, and click "Next". This will completely remove all installed components of Taz: Wanted, but if any saved games are detected you will be asked if you wish to remove them. You can also use the "TazWanted Demo Maintenance" icon on your start menu, or "Add/Remove Programs" from the Control Panel. 2b. Re-Installing ------------------------------------------------------ To REINSTALL Taz: Wanted, for example if you have accidentally deleted some files, or there was a problem during the installation, follow the same procedure, except select the "Repair" radio button instead. 2c. Instructional Manual ------------------------------------------------------ Included on this product's game disc is an electronic version of the game's Instruction Manual in .pdf format, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 (which enables you to view the manual in .pdf format), and an Install Guide file explaining how to access and use these features. Please refer to the Install Guide file by clicking on the Start button on your Windows® taskbar and then selecting Programs > Infogrames Interactive > TazWanted > Install Guide. ====================================================== 3. The Launcher Menu ====================================================== 3a. Video ------------------------------------------------------ VIDEO: This drop-down menu allows you to specify your video card (if you have several), or a different driver if your video card has more than one compatible installed. We recommend that you only change the "Driver" option if you experience graphical problems that cannot be resolved in any other way. RESOLUTION: Select this option to set your screen resolution for optimum performance. Typically, the lower you set the resolution, the faster will your game run, but with a lower graphics quality. Note that some available options may not run at all; if you experience problems with getting Taz: Wanted to start properly, always try with a different screen resolution before anything else. "640x480x16" is usually the most reliable choice, whereas "1024x768x32" gives a nice graphical quality. COMPATIBILITY MODE: If you use a video card with a Voodoo based chipset, you must check this box. CARTOON LIGHTING: If your video card does not support multi-texturing, all character models will look graphically corrupted, and in worst case, the game will not run at all. This can be avoided by switching OFF the Cartoon Lighting option (this will also increase the overall game speed). If all character models appear strangely "flat" or single coloured, you can try to switch it ON. CARTOON OUTLINE: If you experience graphical corruption related to the black outlines that surround the character models, try toggling this option ON/OFF. This will also increase the overall game speed. DRAW DISTANCE: If you experience that the game runs at a sluggish pace, even at a low screen resolution and the cartoon rendering options OFF, you can try to reduce the draw distance by pulling the slider bar to the left. You can experiment with this setting and the screen resolution for optimum performance. If this slider is set to its minimum value, you may experience problems depending on your video card. If the "skies" in the game appear like a solid blue or black colour, you may want to try and increase the draw distance. 3b. Audio ------------------------------------------------------ AUDIO: This drop-down menu allows you to specify your sound card (if you have several), or a different driver if your sound card has more than one installed. If you hear a sound effect when you press the "Test" button, there is no reason to change this setting. 3c. Controls ------------------------------------------------------ In this menu, you can change or review the controls currently chosen. Note that in the game, you will not see the actual "letter" of the key to press, but the icon displayed next to it in this menu. You will find a summary of the default icons in the manual, but if you change this set-up, we recommend that you note your changes on a separate piece of paper for easy reference. Click the "Default" button in the lower right corner to restore the controls settings to what is described in the manual and below. ====================================================== 4. LIST OF DEFAULT CONTROLS ====================================================== General ------------------------------------------------------ Arrow Keys: Move Taz F: Spin C: Jump R: Bite D: Rant / Special X: Tip-Toe V: Look Around (First Person) E: Rotate Camera Left T: Rotate Camera Right Arrow Keys: Navigate in menus ESC: Pause, or Close an open menu, or Cancel a menu choice RETURN: Accept a menu choice Space: Brings Up The Map P: Pauses the game ====================================================== 5. SAVING YOUR GAME ====================================================== The game is automatically saved each time you exit a level, or when you exit the main menu to enter the game. Be careful though, as exiting a level restores all destructible items in it! ====================================================== 6. KNOWN ISSUES ====================================================== Taz: Wanted has been thoroughly tested for stability and compatibility to ensure highest possible quality and performance. Despite this, it is unfortunately impossible to foresee every possible type of problem that can occur. * If you have manually cancelled an installation, we STRONGLY recommend that you follow the following procedure: 1) Re-install the game (see section 2b above) 2) Uninstall the game (see section 2a above) 3) Install the game again, according to the manual If you do NOT follow this procedure, you may experience crashes when trying to save, problems with the music, and/or severe loading times. * In general, if you encounter any problems, save your game, exit the program and restart your machine. Also please make sure that you have the latest version of driver files for your video and sound card. * If you are using a graphics card with a Voodoo chipset you must select the compatibility mode. To do this from the Taz: Wanted Launcher, click 'Video' and tick the compatibility mode box. * We recommend that you do not use the "alt-tab" functionality to switch between different Windows applications. For maximum stability, we also recommend that you switch off any applications that may display "pop-up windows" on-screen during game play (for example MSN Messenger service or ICQ), as this may cause stability problems with certain combinations of video cards and Windows versions. 7a. Troubleshooting ------------------------------------------------------ 1. PROBLEM: The game runs at a "sluggish" pace. POSSIBLE REASON: The specifications of your processor and/or graphics card may have to be increased to ensure maximum performance. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - In the Taz: Wanted Launcher, click 'Video' and change the Screen Resolution to '640 x 480 x 16 bpp'. - In the Taz: Wanted Launcher, select 'Video' and make sure 'Cartoon Outline' and 'Cartoon Lighting' are NOT checked. - In the Taz: Wanted Launcher, select 'Video' and pull the 'Draw Distance' slider to the left. 2. PROBLEM: The game is not very smooth. POSSIBLE REASON: If your machine has a low amount of memory you may experience "disk-thrashing" where your hard disk light flickers frequently. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Close any active internet connections. - Exit all other active applications. - Restart your machine and, if possible, freeing up space on your hard drive can reduce this problem. 3. PROBLEM: I have no sound in Taz: Wanted, but I do have it in other applications so there's nothing wrong with my computer! POSSIBLE REASON: Some video and sound card combinations can occasionally cause problems. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your sound card and your video card. Visit the manufacturers web site to download the latest drivers (see section 7c below). - Try changing your sound or video card. - Your sound card may be busy with another application; exit all other programs and, if this doesn't help, restart your computer. 4. PROBLEM: I cannot uninstall Taz: Wanted because it says it is missing files! POSSIBLE REASON: Some files may have been manually deleted, which prevents the uninstall function to work properly. TRY THIS: Re-Install the game (see 2b above), then uninstall it. 5. PROBLEM: I cannot get the game to work with my 3D card. POSSIBLE REASONS: You do not have the latest video drivers, or you use a video card with a Voodoo chipset but not in Compatibility mode. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Exit Taz and launch it again. In the Launcher, click the 'video' button, then make sure that the 'Compatibility Mode' box is checked. - Ensure you have the latest drivers for both your sound card and your video card. Visit the manufacturers web site to download the latest drivers (see section 7c below). - Ensure you have DirectX 8.1 or above installed on your machine. You can obtain the latest version from www.microsoft.com/DirectX 6. PROBLEM: the Installation program "freezes" before the installation is complete! POSSIBLE REASONS: Your hard drive is full, an interfering application is running, your hard drive is damaged, or the CD is dirty or damaged. FIRST TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Make sure that you have at least 850Mb free space on the drive that you are installing to. - If trying to install over a network; don't. - Always exit all other applications before starting the installation program! Some applications that run in the background (like ICQ, MSN Messenger Service, most virus programs) can also potentially cause problems. - Make sure you have some 20Mb free space on your C-drive, as the Installation program needs to create some temporary files while setting up the installation. - Right-click on the drive's icon in the 'My Computer' Window, select Properties > Tools > Check [for errors] now, and, if necessary, also 'Defragment now'. - If you are installing onto a drive that contains one or more shared folders, try to disable the file sharing first, or make sure that no one else is accessing your hard drive at the same time. - Gently wipe off the bottom of the CD with a clean, dry cloth. Be very careful not to scratch the surface of the disk! - Carefully inspect your CD for scratches or deformations. A disk that is damaged out of the packaging should be returned to the store. THEN RE-INSTALL THE GAME AS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 2B ABOVE. 7. PROBLEM: When I load a previously saved game, I have lost control of the mouse and the keyboard! POSSIBLE REASONS: An error occurred when loading the game. TRY THIS: Hit ESC and reload the game from the main menu. 8. PROBLEM: The game just crashes out to Windows for no apparent reason! POSSIBLE REASONS: Conflicting programs or system drivers. Outdated, incorrect or conflicting drivers for your sound card, video card or even the mouse. Outdated, incorrect or conflicting BIOS. Unusual memory configuration. It can be just about anything, since every single computer (yes, even yours!) is unique! TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Restart your computer and try again. - Try the solutions described under problem (5) above. - Re-Install the game (see section 2b above). - Right-click on 'My Computer' > Properties > Performance > Graphics. There are four different settings here for your 'Hardware Acceleration'. Try all four of these, decreasing or increasing by one step at a time. 9. PROBLEM: The game just freezes for no apparent reason! POSSIBLE REASONS: See problem (7) above. TRY THIS: Hit ESC a number of times and see if it resumes. Otherwise, see the possible solutions described under problem (7). 10. PROBLEM: I cannot install Taz: Wanted. POSSIBLE REASON: You are running Windows 3.1, Windows NT or Windows 95. You must have Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP installed on your PC for Taz: Wanted to function correctly. 7b. Error Messages ------------------------------------------------------ MESSAGE: "Unable to start the game..." REASON: If you get this message it means that there was a problem with setting up the graphics for the game. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Ensure you have installed DirectX 8.1 successfully from the CD. - Ensure you don't have any other programs running that may be preventing it from running (such as other games). - Make sure you have the latest drivers (see section 6c below). - Restart your machine and try again. - Try different settings for the games resolutions and video options. - Adjust your display color settings (right-click on desktop > Properties > Settings), to "True Color (16 bit)" and the screen area to "640x480" and try again. - Check the troubleshooting section and any other sections that may be relevant in this document. - Reinstall the game and try again. MESSAGE: "Unable to start Taz: Wanted." REASON: The computer was unable to find the game on the CD. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Ensure the Taz: Wanted CD is free of scratches and dirt, and is in your computer's CD drive. MESSAGE: "Unable to start the audio..." REASON: This message means that the game was unable to begin using the soundcard on your machine. TRY ONE OR MORE OF THESE: - Ensure you have a DirectX-compatible soundcard installed and working correctly on your machine. - Ensure you don't have any other applications that require sound for their main functionality (such as games or MP3 players). - Restart your machine and try again. - You can still play the game without a working sound card. MESSAGE: "Selected controller was not detected..." REASON: This message means that the game was unable to detect the gamepad or joystick connected to your machine. - Ensure you have a DirectX-compatible controller installed and working correctly on your machine. - Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your controller (see 7c below). - Restart your machine and try again. 7c. Updating Your Drivers ------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: While updating drivers is a normal part of maintenance of your home PC and is recommended to be done 2-4 times per year, we must stress that all computer maintenance should be carried out by trained professionals. In addition to the liability restrictions in the End User License Agreement, Infogrames or its subsidiaries holds no responsibility for any problems that may be caused by attempted or completed driver updates. 1) If you're having any GRAPHICAL problems with Taz: Wanted -- before contacting the consumer support -- please make sure that you have the latest version of the driver file for your video card. To check this, RIGHT-CLICK on 'My Computer' on the Desktop and select 'Properties'. Select the 'Device Manager' tab and click on the little plus sign before 'Display Adapters'. You will now see the name of your video card. Select it and click on the 'Properties' Button, then select the 'Driver' tab, and finally click on the 'Update Driver' button. You may need to visit the web site of your video card manufacturer to find and download the most recent version for your video card. Below are some of the most common web sites for the most common video and sound card manufacturers: www.nvidia.com (Quadro, GeForce, TNT, Detonator video cards) www.matrox.com (Millennium, Marvel video cards) www.3dfx.com (Voodoo cards) www.ati.com (Radeon, Rage, XPert video cards) www.creative.com (3D Blaster video cards, SoundBlaster sound cards) These are some other video card, sound card and hardware manufacturers: www.3Dlabs.com (Wildcat, Oxygen cards) www.asus.com www.aopen.com www.guillemot.com www.hercules.com (Thrustmaster peripherals, Hercules cards) www.jaton.com www.leadtek.com www.powervr.com www.quantum3d.com www.real3d.com www.rendition.com www.sis.com.tw www.tridentmicro.com To download the latest version of DirectX, please go to www.microsoft.com/DirectX (for DirectX 8.1 or above) If you don't find what you're looking for, "www.downloads.com" by C-NET is a good all-round source for all types of drivers, and with extensive search functions. In particular, this may be the best choice for older video cards, such as Elsa (Gladiac, GLoria, Synergy), Viper, Stealth, and Speedstar cards. 2) If you're experiencing problems with the SOUND, a JOYSTICK or a GAMEPAD in Taz: Wanted, repeat the above procedure with your Sound Card (My Computer > Properties > Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers). 3) Before contacting the consumer support, make sure you have compiled the following information about your PC. This can be found on My Computer > Properties > General and Device Manager: - Windows version - Processor type - Amount of RAM - Graphics card manufacturer and model - Sound card manufacturer and model ====================================================== 8.
