Many years ago as a filmmaker I developed an interest in interactive technologies. As I began to work with them, I realised that they had great potential for opening up new kinds of learning experiences for young people. They offered an alternative to some of the traditional approaches to education that did not work for me as a youth. As a result, for over 15 years I've been committed to finding ways to capture kids' natural interest in learning and engage them more actively and productively in the learning process. Lucas Learning reflects my own passion for learning as it creates products like this one. DroidWorks explores rich content in an immersive and entertaining environment as it engages the player in constructing droids and then trying them out in challenging environ- ments. I hope you enjoy the experience and that it will contribute to your own lifetime of learning. -George Lucas * Lucas Learning's Mission To unlock the potential of the individual by creating "uncommon learning experiences" through high-quality software. b) Keyboard Commands and How to Control Your Droid * To see the keyboard commands while playing a mission, double-click on the ? button. Exit out of the game before ejecting the CD from the drive. * We have found that some computers with Windows 95 OSR2 and certain CD-ROM drives may bring up a Windows con- firmation box if you try to eject the DroidWorks CD. This box is not visible when in the game. If you try to eject the CD-ROM while DroidWorks is running and it doesn't open, press ENTER on your key- board to confirm the unseen Windows message. This should allow you to continue normally. d) Installing and Uninstalling * Please make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive in order to play DroidWorks. We have found that if you have less than 20 MB of free space on your hard drive after installing, you may not be able to start the game. * See the Online Troubleshooting Guide for more infor- mation regarding hard disk space requirements. * You may uninstall DroidWorks by selecting the "Uninstall Star Wars DroidWorks" shortcut from your Start menu, or by clicking on the Uninstall DroidWorks button in the DroidWorks launcher. Then follow the instructions to remove the game from your machine. * NOTE: If you run the uninstaller from the shortcut in the Start menu, it will not remove your player files. The uninstaller will notify you of the locations of any files still on your hard drive, and you may delete them manually. e) Laptop Systems * While DroidWorks should work fine, it has not been tested with laptop systems and therefore we cannot guarantee compatibility. Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible to configure a game that would work with all of them. Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a gaming machine because of memory configurations, their microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e. no place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily designed to be used with productivity software. * The other common problem is that laptop systems will attempt to compress the traditional version of the standard 101 function keyboard (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller key config- uration. This is usually done by relying on multi- function keys that allow the user to assign different functions to the same key. Unfortunately, this has been known to cause problems with our games. f) Task Switching (or ALT+TAB) * If you need to return to your desktop while playing DroidWorks, please use the ALT + TAB combination to task switch. g) Game Crash Issues * If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems, you should try to properly exit Windows and reboot your computer. (As a rule, you should never turn off your computer while the hard drive is active.) This will help to prevent possible problems related to the error that you have experienced. * If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears frozen, please press ESC, SPACEBAR, or ENTER before trying anything else. * If your screen remains black for an extended period of time, restart your computer. h) Pausing the Game * To pause the game during play, press the PAUSE|BREAK key. The game will display a dialogue box while it is paused. i) Connecting to the Internet * In the InDex section of DroidWorks, there is a button which connects you to our web site. This feature will not work unless you are already connected to an Internet service provider (ISP) or have your browser configured to connect to the Internet as necessary. * A note about the Internet: The InDex gives you the option to connect to the Internet for further exploration on related topics. You need to have an Internet account already set up and functioning correctly. Clicking the Internet button in the InDex launches your default browser, which activates your modem and connects you to the DroidWorks InDex page on the Lucas Learning web site. Because of the nature of the Internet, you are not confined to our web site alone, but you are free to go anywhere on the Internet you are normally able to go. If your browser has restricted access protection, such as AOL, Net Nanny, or Cyber Patrol, the InDex still honours that protection. If you wish to restrict Internet access altogether, almost all modem programs (including the one built into Windows 95) have password protection that can block Internet access whether you're dialing from your browser or dialing from the InDex. In summary, the InDex does not give you access to the Internet beyond what you already have. It simply makes use of your current setup. * If you would like to disable the InDex's Internet feature all together, you may do so from within the INSTALL program. Warning: once disabled, you will need to reinstall DroidWorks to enable the feature again. * Disclaimer: While Lucas Learning and Ubi Soft Entertainment takes responsibility for the materials on our own web site, we have no control over where the user goes from this site and cannot take responsibility for the contents of other sites, even if links are provided to other sites from Lucas Learning's site. * After connecting to the Lucas Learning web site, you must click on the DroidWorks button on the task bar to return to the game. j) OEM Features on Brand Name Machines * Many brand name computers come with a variety of features provided by the manufacturer, including special buttons on the keyboard or special functions assigned to buttons common to all keyboards. For example, on one machine we tested with the PAUSE key did not work within the game because the PC's manufacturer had assigned that key to bring up a special menu on the desktop. In general, we recommend that you do not use the special "bells and whistles" your machine came with while playing DroidWorks. 2) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop a) Active Desktop * If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, we recommend that you disable Active Desktop before playing DroidWorks as it uses memory and resources that the program may need. 3) Gameplay Issues a) Game Speed/Resolution Issues * A slow frame rate has been shown to affect gameplay in DroidWorks. On computers with slow frame rates, you may have difficulty controlling your droid, and other characters may be unable to move. Adjust the screen to a smaller size to increase your frame rate using the + or - keys or the slider on the right side of the screen. b) Skipping Cutscenes or Dialogue * To skip cutscenes or dialogue, press the ESC key. c) Improving Performance * The easiest way to improve DroidWorks' performance, especially on slower machines, is to increase your install size. To do so, uninstall the game, then reinstall and choose the 'custom' option. You will the be prompted to specify your new install size. * NOTE: The minimum install size may result in performance and gameplay problems on some machines. We do not recommend using the minimum install size on low-end machines. 4) Control Issues * DroidWorks supports only the keyboard for controlling droids in the missions. a) Keyboard Issues * It is recommended that you avoid using the Windows 95 key (the key with the flying window logo, usually located between ALT and CTRL) while playing DroidWorks. b) Mouse Issues * DroidWorks does not support the mouse as a controller for droid movement. The mouse is used to access interface controls (such as the inventory) in the missions. * You may use your mouse to look around while in the missions by holding down the 'V' key while moving your mouse around. c) Joystick Issues * Joysticks are not supported. d) Sound Issues * If you find that the music in missions is too loud or too quiet and you are unable to change the volume through the DroidWorks options menu, then you may adjust these levels using the Windows Volume Control icon. Use the ALT + TAB keys to go to the desktop, then double-click on the speaker icon in the corner of the taskbar and adjust volumes as desired. 5) How to Contact Ubi Soft Entertainment Ltd. * Please see the Troubleshooting Guide on the CD for late-breaking news and help. * Ubi Soft Entertainment has set up a variety of services to provide you with information about our latest games, hints and gameplay assistance, and technical support. a) Hints Hints will be provided at regular interviews on the Ubi Soft web site.
