Star Trek: Deep Space Nine(r) Dominion Wars v1.02 Much has changed in the gameplay of Dominion Wars since the manual was originally put together some 3 months before our gold master date. Those changes will be detailed in this file. The Founders, the architects and leaders of Gizmo Games, hope you enjoy playing Dominion Wars as much as we enjoyed creating it. - The Dominion Wars team --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This document contains additional information on: * Install and Operation * Options / Preferences Menu * The Fleet Interface Panel * Multiplayer Game Types INSTALL AND OPERATION Install: * If you do not have DirectX 8.0 or higher, Dominion Wars will automatically install DirectX 8.0 onto your system, as Dwars requires this version to run the game. * If you have a higher version of DirectX than 8.0, the install program will not overwrite the version you currently have. * Following the install of Dominion Wars, you will be prompted if you wish to install Gamespy Arcade. Gamespy Arcade is required if you wish to play over the Gamespy network. * The typical install requires 525MB of free hard drive space. * The compact install requires 80MB of free hard drive space. All movies and music will stream off the CD. Operation: * Dominion Wars requires that the CD be in the drive in order to run the game. * In multiplayer, each player will need to have an original copy of the game, as Dominion Wars does not spawn. OPTIONS / PREFERENCES MENU Difficulty setting: * You can set the difficulty of the game by using the slider bar. Normal (default) setting is in the center. The extreme left makes the game easier by tweaking the enemy's firing rate to be 20% slower, accuracy 20% less, and search radius 50% less. The extreme right of the bar makes the enemies fire 20% faster, hitting 20% more often, and increasing search radius by 50%. Speed setting: * The game can be slowed down by 50% by sliding the bar all the way to the left, or sped up by 50% by sliding the bar all the way to the right. FLEET INTERFACE PANEL Threat icon system: * When ships are within scanning range of any ships in your fleet, those ship silhouettes will appear on the left side of the screen, above the mini-map. Ship/base icons are colored according to their team-blue, green, red, purple, yellow, brown, gray, cyan. * Letter designations are assigned to each ship-A through F. There may be multiple ships of the same class in a team's fleet, therefore use the letter designations to help identify targets. * When one of your ships is being targeted, the bar around the icon will turn red, and the icon will position itself above the ship being attacked. * You may interact with any of the threat icons in the same fashion as ships in the main viewscreen-single-click to target them for attack (targeted ships will be identified by green brackets) or double click on them to position the camera on that ship. You can scan an enemy ship via it's icon, just get your scan cursor and click it on any enemy icon present, the ship's data will transfer to your PIP (Picture in Picture) display. You can transport crew or devices onto an enemy via it's icon also. Example, if your Defiant-class is attacking an enemy Galor-class ship, the Galor's threat icon will appear above the Defiant. There will be green brackets in the icon around it's silhouette. If the Galor is attacking the Defiant in return, the bar around the icon will turn red. * Ships conducting transports will have the bar around their silhouettes turn blue while the transport is happening. * If a ship silhouette suddenly disappears from display, that ship has probably either cloaked, warped away or has been destroyed. Transporters: * You may transport both crewmembers and equipment to other ships or planets. * To put crew into the transporter, simply click on the crew-type (security, engineering, command) and they will move into the transporter room. Your cursor will change to transport mode. You need to select a destination (enemy ship, friendly ship, planet, starbase, etc.). Left-click and your crew will be transported if you are within range and if the target's shields are down. (Note that friendly ships will automatically lower shields to conduct the transport.) Right-clicking while in transport mode will cancel the order. * To put cargo into the transporter, first click on the Cargo button. You'll see a small display of cargo on board your ship. Click the cargo you wish to transport, and then select the destination. * If you are transporting items from a target to your ship, you must first scan the target. You'll need to knock the target's shields down first, then click the Cargo button and you will see any pieces of cargo on board the target. Then if the shields are still down, select the cargo you wish to beam off. Finally select a destination for the cargo. MULTIPLAYER GAME TYPES For all game types, the Host Player selects maps, starting credits, whether or not ships or OWP's (orbital weapon platforms) respawn, whether or not to allow Starship Creator: Warp II ships, and the victory point total to reach. Death Match: * Score a point each time you destroy an enemy ship. * Points are scored per-player, rather than per-team. * Certain maps contain planets with components. Use scanners to find those components and beam them aboard your ships. They can turn the tide of battle! Conquest: * Score a point for each planet you take over and hold. Beam troops onto planets to hold them. * Your starbase will constantly generate new crew. * If you lose a planet to enemy control, you lose a point. * The first player to conquer all planets or to achieve the point total set by the host is the victor (Or first to conquer the maximum number of planets in the map). Domination: * Capture and hold planets by transporting crew onto them. * Score points for holding planets - the longer you hold them, the more points you will receive. Points are cumulative so control as many planets as you can. * Your starbase will constantly generate new crew. * First player to reach the victory points is the winner. Find the Founder: * At the beginning of each game, the computer will randomly place a Changeling (excuse me, a Founder) onto a random object on the map. * Use the Scan command to scan objects in search of the Founder. If the Founder is present, an icon of him will appear under scan details in the Cargo hold. * Travel to the Founder's location, and use transporters to target and beam him onto one of your ships. * Take the Founder back to your starbase and beam him aboard to score a point for your team. * After the Founder is delivered to a starbase, the computer will randomly place the Founder back onto the map. * The first player to reach the victory points is the winner. Attack/Defend Starbase: * Each side has a starbase. * The goal is to attack and destroy your enemy's starbase while at the same time protecting yours. Or destroy a central starbase such as Deep Space Nine. The map will contain the information you need to win. Instant Action Games: * The computer will randomly select ships & appropriate captains for those ships based upon the set resource point allocation. * Fleets will be selected according to the race each player has chosen. * Devices and crew will automatically be added to ships if resources are available. Frequently Asked Questions: - I am not getting intro movies, the tutorials, and the music is not playing OR I am getting a direct draw enumeration error when trying to load the game. There are a few things you should try: 1) Ensure you have the latest video card drivers. 3Dfx card users should go to: http://www.3dfx.com/downloads.htm nVidia card users should go to: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers ATI card users should go to: http://support.ati.com/products/pc/graphics/index.html Matrox card users should go to: http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/home.cfm (Note that as of this writing the latest beta drivers for the Matrox G400/450 family are not yet available. Matrox is working hard to release these new drivers which will fix the problem.) 2) Make sure your desktop resolution is not 1600x1200 (or higher) and 32-bit color. The game has problems auto-adjusting that high of a resolution. Reduce the resolution to 1024x768 16-bit and that should work fine. 3) For ATI Rage Pro users, you most likely will need to download updated Digital Video drivers from the Microsoft website. The current Rage Pro divers do not contain the proper decompression ultilities to allow Dominion Wars Bink movies to play. Updating with the latest Digital Video drivers should solve the problem. Users of other video cards, such as the Voodoo3 or Geforce 2 GTS, might find this update beneficial as well if no other solutions are working. Here is the link for the Microsoft site (the DV driver is at the bottom of the page): http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp - I have a 3Dfx card and Im not getting movies or tutorials. I have the latest drivers. Try disabling the advanced 3Dfx option, Scanline Interleaving (SLI) and the movies should now play. It is located in the 3Dfx options control panel. After altering the setting, you should reboot your machine. - Im getting a green graphics palette. Everything looks green. You need to download the most recent drivers. For ATI Radeon cards, the latest beta drivers will fix the problem. Get the drivers from: http://support.ati.com/products/pc/graphics/index.html Depending on your OS, you will want the Alternate, unsupported (beta) drivers. For the Radeon drivers, they located at: http://support.ati.com/products/pc/radeon/radeon_drivers.html If you are running WinME you want: Alternate Driver - 4.13.7115 If you are running Win2k you want: Alternate Driver - 5.13.01.3211 If you are running Win98 you want: Alternate Driver - 4.13.7115 Unfortunately, Matrox G400/450 card users will need to wait until Matrox releases their new beta drivers which will fix this problem. Matrox is working hard to resolve this. - The game loads about 75% of the way then freezes. Here is a work-around for the problem: Go into the Preferences/Options menu of the game and move the MUSIC bar all the way to the left (to MIN). That should solve the starting of a new game or the loading of a saved game. (Thanks to Dave Williams for the work-around.) - When I launch the game, the game crashes immediately. Make sure your desktop resolution is not 1600x1200 (or higher) and 32-bit color. The game has problems auto-adjusting that high of a resolution. Reduce the resolution to 1024x768 16-bit and that should work fine. - I didnt see the Dominion Wars lobby when I launch Gamespy Arcade. Gamespy opened up support for Dominion Wars at about 9pm PST on Tuesday, June 12th. When you launch Gamespy Arcade, you will now see the Dominion Wars lobby. - What operating systems are supported by Dominion Wars? The game supports Win95, 98, ME, and 2000. It does not support Windows NT 4.0. - When I go to save games, the program crashes. You cannot currently overwrite an existing saved game. You will need to simply enter a new name for each saved game. You can delete old games by manually going into your Dominion Wars saved games folder through Windows Explorer, and deleting the saved games there. - How do I activate devices on my ships? Some devices will be activated immediately once you enter the game, others, such as the Quantum Torpedo upgrade, you will need to click on in order to apply the upgrade. To do this, select the ship with the upgrade, then click the cargo button. You will see a small picture of the device. Right-click on the device to apply it. Your ship will now have that enhancement active! See the official Dominion Wars website (Official DWars website--devices) for descriptions on each device. - How do I import ships from Creator: Warp 2? Warp 2 ships may only be imported into multiplayer games. Ships saved from Warp 2 into the default directory (see the manual for the correct path) will appear in the Fleet Set-up screen of multiplayer games that allow Warp 2 ships. Scroll through the list of selectable ships, and all the Warp 2 ships will appear towards the right side of the ship listing. Captains are imported in the same way as ships. - I have an ATI Mobility card in my laptop and cannot get the game to run. A work-around was posted by Kris Jackson. We have not tested this, but others have stated it has solved their problems, so ATI Mobility card users might want to give it a shot. Here is the post: You won't believe this but after a week of digging into the net looking for answers I was able to put 2 and 2 together and assume that most ATI Drivers are generic and work for most any ATI card (exceptions of course). Further searching lead to 3rd party drivers that worked. Do the following EXACTLY!!!: MY system: WIN ME DELL Inspiron 3800 Celeron 600mhz 128 mb ram 20 gig hd ATI Rage Mobility AGP 2x 8mb video card Download the new drivers from : http://soundcardcentral.com/downloads/rageltman/FDv3.zip (Make SURE its the RagePro Driver Final - FDv3 November 12 2000 - 4.74 megs) Put in a folder on desktop and unzip. DO NOT INSTALL YET!!! DO THIS: Read the README.txt >>> Instructions for the clean install: Change the video card to standard VGA by going into the driver tab in the cards properties. Then, open the start menu, start regedit, and delete thehkey/localmachine/software/ati technologies key. Reboot. upon reboot you'll have 640x480x8 desktop, this is good. Go into the windows/system folder and delete all files that start with "ati." Do the same in windows/system32 and windows/inf/other. Then, install the new driver. While installing the new drivers answer yes to replacing any NEW drivers with OLD!!! REBOOT. START DOMINIO WARS . ENJOY. If it works, which it should, Send a THANK YOU note to RageLtMan-Boris M. Lukashev email: rageltman@rage3d.com He developed the drivers, I just stumbled across them and put it all together. This should work for most ATI cards. For more info see: http://www.drivers.homestead.com/index2.html http://www.soundcardcentral.com/rage3d/rageltman.htm - The movies will pop up briefly, but then they disappear as if I have bypassed them when I haven't touched anything. If you have a wireless mouse connected, this is a known issue. Swap our your wireless mouse with a PS2 or USB mouse then reboot your machine. Allow Windows to install the correct drivers. - I saved the game, now when I load up a saved game my ships no longer fire. This is a known bug and we apologize for the inconvenience. Here is a work-around for it: - after you load the saved game, highlight all of your ships by hitting "A" - with all your ships selected, press each of the fire control commands (fire on my mark, hold fire, alpha strike, fire at will) - now you may select the type of fire control you want your ships to have (fire at will, alpha strike, etc.) Your ships will now fire. For whatever reason they are getting loaded into the game with the "Hold Fire" command, and aren't being reinitialized until you press all the fire control types. - General help Try to download the driver version recommended for your card model on the MicroSoft Windows Hardware Compatibility List. (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) The drivers recommended here will have been tested at the WHQL labs and should work with the game if the developers have followed MicroSoft's guidelines for using the DirectX API. To run dxdiag: Click Start, then Run. Type dxdiag and click ok. Post your findings in the Full Version Help messageboard and we will try and resolve the problem for you on a case-by-case basis. (Thanks to Annika and GoranAgar for the above general help.) Also ensure your video drivers post-date 11-9-00, which was the release of DX8.0a. Finally, ensure you have closed all background programs (mail, virus scanners, ICQ, web browsers, etc.) before you install Dominion Wars. This will help create a clean install.
