Jeff Wayne's 'The War Of The Worlds' 26th October. Version 1.00 Thank you for purchasing Jeff Wayne's 'The War Of The Worlds'. We hope this product brings you many hours of enjoyment. This text file contains late-breaking information that didn't make it into the manual. Additions to manual =================== Martian fences: All Martian fences need a Power Plant before they will work. Surrendering the sector: If you have nothing valuable left in a sector, you can leave the battle quickly by self-destructing the objects that are left. Trouble-Shooting ================ In addition to the Troubleshooting guide in the Manual: Q. Problems with multiple CD drives. A. The War Of The Worlds MUST be installed from the primary CD drive on your system (i.e. with the lowest drive letter). If the game has already been installed from another drive, then it must be unistalled, and then re-installed from the primary drive. Q. Cannot hear CD music within the game. A. Firstly check to see if the CD audio is not muted or turned down in the Windows volume controller. Also make sure that the Windows CD Player is closed before starting the game. Q. Game doesn't run after installation is complete. A. If the game fails to initialise after installation, make sure you have DirectX5 or later installed on you machine. The latest version of DirectX 6 is supplied on both CDs, and can be installed from the AutoPlay menu. See Chapter 2: Installation in the manual for more details on DirectX and The AutoPlay menu. Q. Problems with sound or video. A. Although 'The War Of The Worlds' has been extensively tested with the majority of third-party hardware, it is inevitable that some incompatibilities may occur. In the rare case that you may experience sound or video problems with the game, we recommend that you obtain the latest drivers from the appropriate hardware manufacturer. Also make sure your sound and video card drivers are certified by Microsoft and DirectX. Q. On some hardware configurations, you may experience some audio problems when running the game in resolutions other than 640 * 480. When the screen mode changes the sound may momentarily distort. A. This may be caused by your current DirectX drivers. We always recommend that you obtain the latest versions driver from your hardware manufacturer. Q. DDERR - Out of Memory. Unable to create surfaces. A. This is DirectDraw detailing that you do not have enough available memory to continuing running the current application. In the very rare situation this error occurs, make sure that you have nothing running in Windows before playing 'The War Of The Worlds'. You may need to manually disable programs, such as Virus Checkers, before running the game. You can also try increasing the size of Virtual Memory in Windows, though make sure you have enough free disk space for Windows to create the swapfile. A lack of available disk space may also cause 'Out of Memory' errors. Q. Game occasionally returns to Windows when a system utility interrupts the game. A. Some system utilities, such as Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, may cause the game to return to Windows. Make sure you have these utilities disabled before playing the game. Q. AutoPlay still isn't working A. If you are still having problems with the AutoPlay box not appearing, after following all the instructions in the manual, under Chapter 2: Installation then explore the HUMAN CD and double-click on the autoexec.exe program.
