What can I do to get the best performance when running Clifford Learning Activities? * Shut down as many open programs as possible before running Clifford Learning Activities. Shut down the applications running in your Window's taskbar at the bottom right of your computer screen. * Make sure virtual memory is set to windows management. Here's how: 1. Click the START menu, choose Settings, and then choose Control Panel. 2. In the Control Panel, double-click the System icon. 3. In the System Properties window, select the PERFORMANCE tab. 4. Select the VIRTUAL MEMORY BUTTON. 5. Select the LET WINDOWS MANAGE MY VIRTUAL MEMORY SETTINGS radio button. 6. Click the OK button and exit from the System Properties window. 7. Restart your computer if prompted. 2. While playing the game, I get an error message telling me that I'm out of memory. What should I do? * If you are getting an "Out of Memory" message, the system crashes a lot, or performance is sluggish, chances are your memory resources are stretched to capacity. Try following the suggestions described under question 1 above and then restart your computer to reduce memory strain and improve performance of the program. 3. I don't hear sound through my speakers or headphones while playing Clifford Learning Activities. What should I do? * If you do not hear sound, make sure that your speaker or headphone cables are connected to your sound card, your speakers have power, and the volume is turned on. * Make sure your sound card is properly configured for Windows and the appropriate sound drivers are installed. To test for sound, double-click the SOUNDS icon in your Windows Control Panel. Select a sound file, then click the TEST button. You should hear a sound. If not, your sound card is not properly set up. Refer to your sound card user's manual for instructions on proper configuration and installation. * Your computer is missing a component required by Clifford Learning Activities for audio playback. Double click the dxsetup.exe file in the DirectX8 directory on the Clifford Learning Activities CD. Proceed through the installation of DirectX. 4. Audio is not functioning correctly within Clifford Learning Activities. Audio stutters or is garbled within Clifford Learning Activities. Or, you receive a "No Sound drivers found" message in Clifford Learning Activities. * Before starting Clifford Learning Activities make sure that all other applications which play audio have been exited. * On some computers, problems in the audio driver software may prevent Clifford Learning Activites from playing sound correctly. Contact your computer manufacturer for instructions on getting updated audio drivers. * Some sound cards do not have official Windows ME or Windows 2000 drivers available. The manufacturer of a sound card may not have released an updated version of the audio drivers for a particular Windows Operating System. Therefore it is possible that some systems have sound cards that are not completely compatible with Windows ME / 2000 and some of the sound buffering and acceleration features that DirectX requires. One way to adjust and possibly fix any audio problems which you may be having within Clifford Learning Activities is to adjust the way that your audio card handles Hardware Acceleration. Here is how to do this: 1. Open the "Run" dialog from the Windows Start menu. 2. Type "dxdiag" into the text field and press Enter. 3. The DirectX Diagnostics window opens. 4. Click on the "Sound" tab. 5. Locate the "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" slider and drag it to the left most position, such that "No acceleration" is shown as the current setting. 6. Click on "EXIT". 7. Start Clifford Learning Activities. 5. The printed Posters look grainy, gray, or pixelated. What can I do to improve the print quality of these images? * You can control the quality of printed images by selecting the highest possible print resolution (usually 300 dpi or 600 dpi). Higher resolution prints look better than low resolution prints or "draft" modes. To adjust your printer settings: 1. Click the START menu, select SETTINGS, and click PRINTERS. 2. Select the printer you are using. 3. Click the FILE menu and choose PROPERTIES to view or change your printer settings. * If your printer is set to the highest possible resolution and your printed Posters screens still don't look as good as you would like, contact your printer manufacturer to get the latest "printer drivers." These software extensions are updated and improved frequently. Many older drivers do not print pictures correctly. 6. The setup program stops part of the way through. What should I do? * Setup failures usually occur when you attempt to install a program while other applications are running. To avoid this, close ALL open applications before you launch the Clifford Learning Activites setup program. You may even need to close programs which start automatically when you run Windows. * When installing on a computer which has users set up with different access rights, such as Windows 2000, you must be logged onto the computer as a user which has administrator rights to the windows directory and registry before installing. 7. Printing does not complete on my printer when printing within Clifford Learning Activities. * Certain printers attempt to print within the foreground or as the frontmost application when a print job is sent to them. Clifford Learning Activities will not permit this. To turn this feature off on your printer open the printer control panel, click on the options tab and select the "Run Minimized" button. 8. When I launch Clifford Learning Activities, I am presented immediatly with a dialog box telling me that "A minimum of 16 bit color mode is required". Clifford Learning Activities requires that your monitor settings be set to High Color (16 bit.) On some Windows 95 computers you need to change these settings manually, and then launch the program again. * To manually change your monitor's color setting, Open the Display control panel. Select the Settings tab and change the color palette to High Color (16 bit.) ------------------------------------ TECHNICAL SUPPORT ------------------------------------ For additional assistance, contact our support staff by telephone at: U.S. -- 1-800-946-0131 International callers -- 410-568-3600 Fax inquiries -- 410-891-0212 Hours of operation (excluding holidays): + 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M.
