Chessmaster 7000 Version 1.1.0 ===================================================================== Table of Contents: I. Late Breaking Changes to the Documentation II. Where to Find the Chessmaster FAQ III. Technical and Customer Support ===================================================================== *** Late Breaking Changes to the Documentation *** The following clarifications to Chessmaster 7000 features and/or modifications of features took place after the manual and the online help file were completed: 1. The Chessmaster team highly recommend running Chessmaster 7000 with a Chessmaster 7000 CD in the drive at all times. If there is no Chessmaster CD in the drive, some features will be unavailable unless you had performed a custom installation and installed everything to your hard drive. 2. A maximum of 16 players can be connected on any single LAN or TCP/IP session in the CMLive Room. 3. The ability to save or load an ASCII Move List file has been removed. Use the PGN format for saving and loading text games as it is much more robust, making a simple ASCII Move List less useful. 4. If you have auto-annotated a game and want to save the game, you may use either the Chessmaster game format or PGN format. The Chessmaster game format will save all of the audio information and text formatting. The PGN format will save the annotation text, but no audio will be saved and the text will not be formatted. 5. The Switch Sides function, located in the Game Room, will rotate the board 180 degrees and also switch players (i.e. the player who was playing the White pieces will now be playing Black, and vice versa). Note that the White and Black players will NOT switch clocks and time controls. 6. Database Notes If the database is not visible in the Database Room after initial installation, resize the window. The database screens will appear. If you used the Typical or Compact installation option, the Chessmaster database (approximately 77 megabytes) was not copied to your hard drive. Therefore, any attempts to modify this database will cause an error because you cannot modify a file that is on a CD-ROM. If you plan to make any modifications to the Chessmaster database, you should re-install Chessmaster with the Custom option and select the "Database" option. Also, using the "Database Findings" tab in the Coach Windows requires access to the database. If the database is not present on the hard disk, you need to have Chessmaster CD #1 in your drive to use this feature. 7. Depending on the speed of your system, you may not see the introductory video or either of the in-game videos of Josh Waitzkin. Chessmaster makes a determination of your computer's speed to see if your machine can play the videos without audio or video distortion, and then plays the videos if your machine is capable. The videos run more efficiently in 16-bit color mode or higher. 8. When you do a typical install, the sound files for the Josh games and the tutorials remain on the CDs. Normally, the program will prompt you for the appropriate CD. If you find yourself playing a Josh game and there is no sound, the program most likely neglected to prompt you for the correct CD. Inserting the correct CD will restore the sound. 9. To define your own sound effects set that will override the sounds played by the "Thematic Sounds" option, you can go to the "Sounds" option in the Windows "Control Panel." There you will find a "Chessmaster" group of sound effects to which you can assign any valid sound file that is in wave format (usually with a "WAV" extension). 10. Warning: Using the Chess Coach during fast time controls (five seconds per move or two minutes per game, for example) can significantly reduce Chessmaster's performance. This is due to the Chess Coach's search of the database after every move to fill in the Advice and Database Findings tabs. The Chessmaster team recommend that you do not use the Chess Coach in blitz games or any time when program performance must be maximized. 11. Clarification: The documentation incorrectly states that there is an option to turn off the audio in tutorials. This option is not available in Chessmaster 7000. ===================================================================== *** Where to Find the Chessmaster FAQ *** The Chessmaster FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) is regularly updated with answers to many of the most popular questions that users ask when they are troubleshooting.
