TROUBLESHOOTING If you are experiencing problems running the program, first check the general troubleshooting guidelines below. If problems persist, check the list that follows for problems and solutions specific to your system. -Check the Program's System Requirements It is important to make sure that your computer has at least what the program requires in its system requirements. System requirements are meant to represent the minimum of what you can use. Thus, it is a gauge of whether or not the program will work on your system. System requirements are listed above in Section I. If your system does not meet the program's minimum requirements, we cannot guarantee that the program will work, and we cannot support it. We recommend that you try returning or exchanging the product at the place of purchase. -Clean the CD-ROM Randomly generated errors can often be caused by the slightest mark, smudge, or lint on the CD-ROM disc. Even if you just bought the program, if you receive an error it is a good idea to clean the CD- ROM. CD-ROM discs go through several washes in the production cycle. For the most part, they are clean, but it is always possible that there is some residue left over. To clean a CD-ROM disc, please follow these steps: 1. Place the CD-ROM label side down on a cotton cloth. 2. Lightly spray the surface of the CD-ROM with a non-ammonia based glass cleaner. 3. Using a clean cotton cloth or chamois, gently wipe from the center of the CD-ROM outward in a straight motion. Note: Do not wipe in a circular motion. Cleaning with a cloth creates hairline scratches, scratches that are perpendicular to the track don't affect the data on the CD-ROM, but scratches that are parallel to the track could cause errors. A. WINDOWS 98 ACTIVE DESKTOP Turning off Active Desktop may help the program perform better. To do this, please follow the steps below: 1. Begin at the Windows 98 desktop. 2. Right-click on the desktop and select Active Desktop from the context menu. 3. Select the option for View as a Web Page to remove the check mark. 4. Return to the program and try running it again. SOUND ACCELERATION If you are experiencing sound problems, such as popping sound, static, or error messages related to sound, you may want to try turning off Sound Acceleration. 1. Begin at the Windows 98 desktop. 2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then point to Control Panel. 3. Double-click to open the Multimedia control panel. 4. Check to make sure your sound card is listed here under Preferred sound device. 5. Click the Audio tab. 6. Under Playback, click the Advanced Properties button. 7. Click the Performance tab. 8. Click the Hardware Acceleration slide bar and move it to None under Audio playback. 9. Click OK. 10. Return to the program and try running it again. B. WINDOWS 95/98 STARTUP SCREEN DOES NOT APPEAR WHEN THE CD IS INSERTED (AUTORUN) If the startup screen does not appear when you insert the CD, you may have older 16-bit CD-ROM drivers. For optimal performance, we suggest you contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive to update the drivers. DISABLING PROGRAMS RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND Some problems, especially those that result in General Protection or Invalid Page Fault error messages, or hanging of the operating system, may be caused by programs running in the background. To disable these programs, you need to modify the Startup folder configuration and edit the WIN.INI file. The Startup Folder The Startup folder allows certain programs to load automatically when you start Windows 95/98. These applications usually run in the background and may conflict with your program. You can stop these applications from loading by doing the following: 1. Click the Windows 95/98 Start button, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar. A Taskbar Properties dialog box appears. 2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab. 3. Click the Advanced button in the Customize Start Menu group. 4. Double-click the Programs folder. 5. Click File, point to New, then Folder. 6. Name the folder Startbk and press Enter. 7. Open the Startup folder. The contents of the folder will be displayed on the right side of the window. 8. Click and hold the right mouse button down on an item in the Startup folder, and drag it to the Startbk folder under All Folders on the left side. When the Startbk folder highlights, release the mouse button. When prompted, choose Move Here. Repeat until there are no more items in the Startup folder. 9. Restart Windows 95/98 for these changes to take effect. Click the Start button, then select Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, choose Restart the Computer. Click the Yes button. In doing this, you have not removed any programs from your system; you can always replace the items by reversing the above process. The WIN.INI File The WIN.INI file allows certain programs to load automatically when you start Windows 95/98. These applications usually run in the background, and could be using memory needed by, or conflicting with, the program. You can stop these programs from loading by doing the following: 1. Click the Start button and point to Run. 2. In the Open box, type WIN.INI and click OK. 3. The WIN.INI file will come up on screen in Notepad. Look near the beginning of the WIN.INI file for the lines that start with load= and run=. Place a semicolon (;) in front of each of these lines so that they now start with ;load= and ;run=. 4. Click Exit on the File menu and then click the Yes button to save the changes made to this file. 5. Restart Windows 95/98 for these changes to take effect. Click the Start button, then select Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, choose Restart the Computer. Click the Yes button. CHANGING COLOR SETTINGS OR RESOLUTION SETTINGS For the game to display properly, your Windows video driver must be set to display 256 colors. For Pentium or greater machines with DirectX installed, you may also set your display to 16-bit color (thousands of colors). To change your Windows video display driver: 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and select Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Display icon. Click the Settings tab. 3. Find and change the options for Color Palette as needed. Note: High Color (16 bit) is equivalent to Thousands of Colors. The game will not run at True Color (24 bit) or higher settings. 4. Click the OK button to accept any changes you have made. Windows may ask if you want to restart the system for the changes to take effect. Click Yes. LARGE FONTS If your machine is set to display Large Fonts, we recommend you set your resolution to 640 x 480 before running the game. To check your display settings: 1. At the desktop, click once with your right mouse button and select Properties. 2. Select the Settings tab and check under the Font size. If the Font size is set to Large Fonts, check the Display area to see what your screen size and desktop size are set to. We recommend you set the Display area to 640 x 480. You can do this by moving the scroll bars to the left and then clicking the Apply button. NO SOUND If you are unable to hear music or sound effects from the game, check to see if you have Windows sound drivers installed. For additional information, please refer to the manual that came with your sound device for instructions on installing Windows sound drivers. There are a few other places to check to ensure that you receive sound if you are having sound difficulties. 1. Make sure the volume is turned up. - Click the Start button and point to Programs, Accessories, Multimedia (Entertainment in Windows 98), and then select Volume Control. - Make sure that the Volume Control (General, Master, etc.) section, as well as the Wave and Midi settings, are set mid-range. - Next, make sure that there are no check marks in any of the Mute boxes of the Volume control panel. If any of the Mute boxes have check marks, click once in the box to remove the check mark. 2. Make sure that the speakers are plugged in and turned on. 3. Check to see if you can play Wave and Midi sounds from your system. - Click the Start button and point to Programs, Accessories, Multimedia, and then select Media Player. - On the File menu, click Open to open the Media folder. - Make sure Files of type: is set for All files (*.*) and double-click any file ending in .mid. - Click the button that looks like the Play button on a standard tape or CD player. - Repeat the above process, this time selecting a file ending in .wav. - If you do not hear both types of sound, you may need to check the configuration of your sound card and/or your sound card drivers. VIDEO SPEEDING UP AND SLOWING DOWN (ALSO KNOWN AS RISING PITCH OF THE CHIEF'S VOICE) OR CHOPPY SOUND DURING VIDEO If you notice the QuickTime movie of The Chief speed up and slow down (which causes a rise in The Chief's voice during the movies), or choppy sound during the video, make sure the Automatic Rate Adjustment for Audio Sampling is disabled. If you experience problems installing or using DirectX on your computer, please consult the hardware manufacturers of your video or sound card for the latest drivers compatible with DirectX. DirectX is a product of Microsoft. You may also want to check Microsoft's Web page for more information. C. WINDOWS 95/98 AND WINDOWS 3.1x DISK SPACE ERROR DURING INSTALLATION If you encounter this message, you will need to free additional space on your hard disk. During installation, QuickTime requires additional hard disk space in order to make a temporary swap file. Once the installation is complete, these files are removed. OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE For optimal performance, we recommend having at least 10 MB of hard disk space available when launching the game. The program requires at least 3 MB (and uses up to 10 MB of hard disk space if it is free) of hard disk space available when you launch the game. Additionally, Windows 95/98 requires approximately 5 to 9 MB of hard disk space for Virtual Memory to function properly. SCREEN SAVERS AND ENERGY SAVER This program usually will not have problems running on machines with screen savers or the Energy Saver enabled. However, should you encounter a problem, we recommend that you first disable your screen saver or Energy Saver before launching the game. To disable them, please refer to the manual that came with your screen saver or monitor. D. WINDOWS 3.1x (no longer supported) NOT ENOUGH PHYSICAL MEMORY This program requires at least 5 MB of available physical memory (this does not include Virtual memory). If you need to make more physical memory available, disable other active programs, such as Smartdrive or other Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs. For information on disabling applications, see DISABLING PROGRAMS RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND below. NOT ENOUGH FREE MEMORY (VIRTUAL MEMORY) This program requires a total of 10 MB of free memory available to Windows. This may be a combination of physical memory and Virtual Memory. To check the amount of free memory currently available to Windows, select About Program Manager from the Program Manager Help menu. At the bottom of the information box will be a line titled "Memory" which will show the amount of free memory available (in KB) to Windows. If the total memory available to Windows is less than 10 MB, try increasing the size of the Windows Swap File (Virtual Memory). To increase the size of the Windows Swap File: 1. Begin at the Windows Program Manager. Double-click on the Control Panel icon, located in the Main program group. 2. Double-click on the 386 Enhanced icon.
