Welcome to Pacific Interactive's "Bill Nye the Science Guy: Stop the Rock!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A deadly meteoroid threatens the Earth - You and Bill Nye the Science Guy must use Cool Science to save the planet. But it won't be easy. Only MAAX, the diabolically smart computer network, can stop the meteoroid. And, it will act only if you successfully solve 7 tricky science riddles. To do so, you must explore Nye Labs and work with the lab's wacky-but-cool scientists to uncover clues and learn about real science, using high-powered science equipment. But hurry, the clock is ticking! This file includes up-to-the-minute items that were not available when the Help Me Handbook was printed. In the paragraphs that follow, you'll find information that will help you enjoy the adventure to its fullest. "Will technical support give me game or riddle hints?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No. Please, don't call technical support about hints to help you solve the riddles. Visit our web site at www.pacint.com for riddle hints and other helpful bits of information about "Stop the Rock!" You may also email us at support@pacint.com. To get you started, we've included a few clues at the end of this file. BUT...don't look unless you need to! "How much disk space do I need?" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The application needs about 1.5 megabytes of space. However, QuickTime takes up space too. If you don't already have QuickTime on your system, you'll need an extra 5 megabytes of free disk space. On Windows systems, you must have 1.5 megabytes of space free on the drive that contains Windows. This is because the installer temporarly places some files in the Windows directory. Once the installer has initialized, it will look for space on all of your drives. You may install the program to any drive that has at least 6 megabytes free. "The video isn't playing back properly on Windows(TM)" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If the program freezes while playing a movie or the picture becomes garbled on the screen, QuickTime may be conflicting with your video card. Go to the QuickTime applet in Control Panel, press the 'More' button, then press the 'Video' tab, and choose 'Video Driver' for the 'Draw Method' in the 'Optimization' box. Restart Windows. "The video isn't playing back properly on Macintosh(TM)" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If some movies don't play or the picture becomes garbled on the screen, the QuickTime Indeo(TM) codec may not be enabled. The Indeo codec is placed in your system folder during install. You must restart your computer for the codec to initialize. If you are using Now Startup Manager(TM), and you have it set to diable new extensions, you must enable Indeo and restart your computer. Please see your Now manual for instructions on how to enable new extensions. "The program freezes during the opening...I can't play the game." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try setting your video card to display at a different number of colors. Some video drivers don't work with QuickTime in all modes. For example, if you are using an ET4000W/32-based video board, you may have to switch from 256 colors to 64,000 colors. Other drivers may work better at different resolutions as well. "The audio is speeding up or slowing down while video is playing on Windows" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If QuickTime garbles the movie's sound or it sounds too fast or too slow, you may need to disable 'Automatic Rate Adjustment'. This option is disabled by the "Stop the Rock!" installer when it installs QuickTime for Windows, but another product may have altered the setting or someone may have changed it. Go to the QuickTime applet in Control Panel, press the 'More' button, then press the 'Audio' tab, and clear the checkbox for 'Automatic Rate Adjustment', then choose 'default' for the 'Requested hz' list box - both of these are in the 'Sample Rate' section. Restart Windows. "I don't hear any sound, or the sound is garbled on Windows" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your sound is not playing properly, your system might be configured with an incorrect or outdated sound driver. Contact your sound card manufacturer to obtain current sound drivers.
